First farm malt whisky distillery on the island of Foehr, Germany! This farm distillery comprises the complete whisky cycle: farm grown barley is malted, dried, ground, mashed, distilled and aged on the farm, just a few hundred meters from the North Sea. The salt laden sea breeze brings a salty, mineral note to the barley itself as well as influencing the spirit aging in the farm’s hayloft.
New spirit is aged mostly in small casks, which means it will be ready for market after 3 years (in 2022). The 1,5 year old new spirit already has a rich, complex nose and taste, so the 3 year old should be outstanding.
The farm is well worth a visit, with a very good farm cafe featuring burgers from their Shorthorn cattle, pulled pork from their Husum Protest pigs, homemade cakes and pies. Lots of farm made products available, including jams, jellies and sauces.
For the sports minded, there is a football-golf field, Funballz, and a petting zoo for the kids.
Definitely worth a visit, for the friendly people (they don’t mind talking with visitors), the delicious food , the sports, the and (of course) for the very decent whisky.
